Art Meets Engineering: Crafting the 2026 Barcelona MotoGP Trophies with The Rag and Bone Man
Here at LUMA-iD, we thrive on projects that blend creative artistry with rigorous technical engineering. So, when the opportunity arose to collaborate once again with local Margate artisan Paul Firbank—widely known as The Rag and Bone Man—to develop the official trophies for the 2026 Barcelona MotoGP (Catalan GP), we jumped at the chance.
Paul is celebrated for his incredible ability to breathe new life into discarded machinery and vintage aviation parts, transforming industrial scraps into luxurious, high-end design pieces. Working with him is always an absolute pleasure. As fellow creators based locally in Margate, it was a fantastic opportunity to merge his raw artistic vision with our established product design and development pipeline.
Here is a look behind the scenes at how we took these incredible MotoGP trophy concepts from an initial spark of an idea to a perfectly engineered reality.
1. From Track to Reality: CAD Visualisation & Track Outline Integration
Every premium physical build begins with a strong concept, but for the 2026 Barcelona round, the design required an extra layer of precision. The core concept of the trophy intricately incorporated the actual track outline of the famous Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Paul brought his initial sketches and material ideas to our studio, and our first objective was translating those flowing geometric lines into high-fidelity 3D CAD models. Mapping a race track layout into a structural, load-bearing trophy component requires exact tolerances. By building the trophies digitally piece by piece, our team generated the photo-realistic renders and technical design files needed for client approval, ensuring the iconic track silhouette was perfectly preserved in the final design.
2. Functional Testing: 3D Printing and Prototyping
In the world of bespoke engineering, aesthetic appeal is only half the battle—the final build must also function flawlessly. Trophies of this scale feature complex interlocking components, precise weight distributions, and unique structural requirements to ensure they feel substantial and balanced when lifted on the podium. Once the CAD models were signed off, we transitioned into the prototyping phase. We utilized our rapid 3D printing and prototyping services to build full-scale mock-ups of the trophy elements. This allowed us to physically evaluate how the track outline integrated with the base, test tolerances, and ensure that every individual mechanism fit together perfectly. Testing the physical mechanics in plastic saved valuable time and manufacturing resources before moving on to final production materials.
3. Precision Execution: Preparing the Manufacturing DataWith the design visually approved and physically validated, the final step was bridging the gap between prototype and final production. We used our finalized, airtight CAD data to compile the complete manufacturing specifications and technical drawings required for the build. This precise engineering data allowed Paul to seamlessly order and manufacture the final premium components, ensuring the end products perfectly mirrored our digital models.
