POLISHING 3D PRINTED MODELS
3DPRINTUK recently purchased a vibratory polishing machine in order to offer a different surface finish to their customers. Small ceramic cones are mixed with water inside the machine and polished for 12 hours. This removes a thin layer of material from the parts, smoothing the surface and making the part feel less like a 3D print and more like an injection moulded part.
The polishing also helps to bring out lot of the details within a model. The external surfaces become more shiny whilst the hidden surfaces – holes or text for example – stay rough as the ceramic cones are too big to polish inside small spaces. Further post finishing such as painting also is made much easier as far less time needs to be spent making the models smooth.
