4GD Dual iPad “Laptop” Case

Engineering the Future of Portable Training: The Dual-Screen Evolution

In the world of professional training, versatility is everything. We recently took on the challenge of designing a rugged, multi-configuration housing for 4GD that transforms two standard iPads into a powerful, laptop-style workstation.

Here’s a look behind the curtain at how we solved the major design hurdles:

Precision Through 3D Scanning
The project started with a complex foundation: the iPort cases. Because of their intricate geometry, traditional measurements weren’t going to cut it. We utilized high-resolution 3D scanning to reverse-engineer the forms, ensuring our custom outer casing provided a glove-like fit while remaining easy to assemble.

The Art of the “Quick-Release”
One of the primary goals was modularity. We developed an intuitive screw-axle release system that allows the user to:

  1. Laptop Mode: Secure the two units together for a seamless dual-screen experience.
  2. Solo Mode: Quickly decouple the units to be used as individual tablets.
  3. Stowed Configuration: Utilize the integrated grab-handle for easy transport.

Magnetic Integration & Ergonomics
To keep the user experience fluid, we moved away from clunky latches.

The Feel: We integrated off-the-shelf magnetic styluses directly into the frame.
The Hold: Strategic magnet placement ensures the device stays firmly in its “open” laptop position during use and remains securely shut when closed.

Defining the Design Language
True to the 4GD brand, the aesthetic is unapologetically durable. We leaned into a “heavy-duty” look characterized by:

  • Bold surfaces and deep chamfers that provide a rugged, tactile feel.
  • A tactical matte black finish across all components.
  • A chunky, durable silhouette that looks right at home in high-intensity training environments.
