The Power of Collaborative Design: A Journey at Plus X Innovation, Slough

The LUMA team recently had the opportunity to participate in the Boost Accelerator Prototyping Programme, held at the Central Research Laboratory (CRL), located within Plus X Innovation in Slough. This programme has rapidly gained a reputation as a hub for forward-thinking innovators, offering a nurturing environment where great ideas take shape and new products are brought to life.

A Unique Setting for Innovation

Plus X Innovation is widely known for its state-of-the-art facilities and its commitment to fostering creativity and collaboration. Split over two floors, Plus X offers a fantastic space equipped with a high-tech prototyping lab and workshop, providing startups and innovators access to the tools needed to bring their designs to fruition. For the LUMA team, being immersed in such a dynamic and well-resourced environment was a perfect match for their mission of refining the design of the Flexybin product design collaborating with Studio Matter and getting a fresh new take on the project.

Why the Boost Accelerator?

The Boost Accelerator Programme is designed to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) accelerate their product development by providing resources, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

Throughout the programme, the LUMA team had access to the CRL’s expert technical assistance and gained insights from industry veteran Jim Reeves who guided them in overcoming direction challenges and honing their design. This collaborative environment fostered not only technical advancements but also creative solutions to real-world problems, perfectly aligning with LUMA’s ethos of practical, user-centred design.

Looking Forward

Participation in the Boost Accelerator Prototyping Programme has reinforced LUMA’s belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of a supportive innovation ecosystem. The team walked away with a wealth of new knowledge, enhanced prototypes, and connections that will continue to drive their Flexybin project forward.

As LUMA continues to grow and innovate, the lessons learned at Plus X will no doubt play a crucial role in shaping the company’s future designs and contributions to the industrial design landscape.

The Boost Accelerator Programme at CRL and Plus X Innovation has been an invaluable experience, and LUMA looks forward to further collaborations and opportunities to continue pushing the boundaries of industrial design.
